Thesis Design - "Wonderhaus High"
The design process for Wonderhaus High was an intense process, nonetheless, enjoyed throughly as it was well planned and received great reviews. This high school, leading approx. 400 students, is a progressive learning community; meaning that the shell of the exterior is a reused adaptable space that seeks to promote leadership and indivuality among its inhabitants. Students who choose to attend have the advantage of exploring various avenues for their future. Situated in an urban environment among the San Diego skyline, students experience an independent college-bound or employment-bound life at first hand. Students collaboratively work in teams on studio(classroom) projects or individually determining their future paths.
The interior of the building is raw and open as it is housed in the historial Wonderbread Factory, built in 1924. The concept for the space is to provide a comfortable transition for graduates. By using the projects developed in class and the surrounding environment, students will be inspired to attain their dreams. In addition to the exciting interior of the space, students are provided with a new philosophy on what school should be like. For example, all classrooms are now studios. The studios are flexible, in that, the whiteboard partitions located on either side are operable allowing for collaborative efforts between disciplines. The furniure used also promotes interaction. Relationship building is key to the success of the end-users, students and faculty alike.
